SAXON‘s new double CD / DVD package ‘Eagles Over Wacken’ is a metal extravaganza. The DVD, spanning three awesome performances at Germany’s legendary Wacken festival (2004, 2007 & 2009), has a great selection of over 30 SAXON songs including a great mix of the old classics and impressive latter day material.
SAXON is one of the most reliable live bands around, and each track is performed with the true British grit that makes SAXON who they are. As ever, Biff Byford‘s vocal are astonishingly powerful, and this performance reinforces my opinion that he is one of the best live metal vocalists.
Live versions of ‘Red Star Falling’ and ‘Attila The Hun’ make the DVD an essential purchase for SAXON die hards. Newer SAXON fans though will enjoy rocking out to the likes of ‘Dallas 1PM’ and ‘Princess of the Night’. There really is something for everyone.
The CD’s in the DVD package are also well worth a listen, documenting a stonking show from the ‘Call To Arms’ tour. Although the sound production isn’t the best, the recording captures the raw energy of SAXON doing what they do best. It’s also great to have live versions of the brand new tracks.
There’s also a separate package with just a double CD which is a recording of the full show from Wacken 2009, the setlist of which was chosen by the fans. I’d say this release is for the hardcore fans only, as it offers nothing extra really to the DVD/CD package.
If you can pick the DVD package up for around £15, then it is worth every penny. This is without doubt the best SAXON live DVD to date. Stick it in your DVD player, crank up the volume and raise those horns! Brilliant.
