The album is front-loaded with its very best tracks, starting very well with an awesome riff dominating album opener 'In Splendour'. As the title suggests, 'Casket Closing' has a darker feeling, and even has a MARILYN MANSON-esque verse, before the double kick pedals thunder in during the chorus. ENGEL are not afraid to use plenty of clean vocals, and this makes for a melodic listening experience, whilst the metal crunch is still maintained. 'Next Closed Door' is a melodic masterpiece, boasting a chorus that is as good as anything IN FLAMES and SOILWORK have managed to date. Unfortunately, the second half of the album doesn't quite match up to the quality standards laid down by the first half. This is with the exception of the excellent 'Scyth' - the album's heaviest number. There are better albums in this over-populated genre, but there are also much worse. 'Absolute Design' is a decent effort from ENGEL and fans of the genre will enjoy this record. However, ENGEL still have a way to go before they can even think about challenging the kings of the genre – but along with SONIC SYNDICATE – they are one of the better new bands emerging in recent years that fly the flag for the 'Gothenburg' sound. Rating 3.6/5.0 James Allman Release Date: 5th November 2007
'Absolute Design' is the debut album from ENGEL, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based quintet featuring guitarists Marcus Sunesson (ex-THE CROWN) and Niclas Engelin (PASSENGER, ex-GARDENIAN, IN FLAMES), drummer Mojjo (RELEVANT FEW, DRACENA), vocalist Mangan Klavborn, and bassist Michael HÃ¥kansson (ex-EVERGREY). The sound of the album, as you'd expect is very much Swedish melodic death metal, with a hint of influence coming through from each of the bands of the members pasts. First and foremost though, ENGEL are another band who will look to profit from the success of IN FLAMES.
