On their official website website, W.A.S.P. had promised that after a 10 minute intermission that they would "return to perform all the great W.A.S.P. classics you know and love". Well they took their 10 minute break all right, but then only returned to play a grand total of 3 more songs. Did they really need to take a 10 minute rest after set less than an hour, to then come back and play what most bands would call an encore? – I think not. Despite, enjoying the fist-pumping anthems of 'L.O.V.E. Machine', 'Wild Child', and 'Blind in Texas' - I, like everybody else in the Nottingham audience was left waiting for much, much more. After the high of the excellent 'Crimson Idol' album, the evening ended up in disappointment. Undoubtedly, a great performance by W.A.S.P. while they were up there (even if there was a hint of the odd backing track, particularly on the chorus backing vocals) – but ultimately this show was at least 2 or 3 songs short of what it should have been. If only that ten minute break should have been spent on the stage playing 'I Wanna Be Somebody' and 'Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)'. W.A.S.P. Setlist: The Titanic Overture / The Invisible Boy / Arena of Pleasure / Chainsaw Charlie (Murders in the New Morgue / The Gypsy Meets The Boy / Doctor Rockter / I Am One / The Idol / Hold On To My Heart / The Great Misconceptions of Me / L.O.V.E. Machine / Wild Child / Blind In Texas Rating 2.5/5.0 James Allman
'The Crimson Idol' album is a fantastic piece of W.A.S.P. history, and a masterpiece that main man Blackie Lawless is quite rightly very proud of. The album tells the rollercoaster, rock 'n' roll story of fictional rock star 'Jonathon'. To mark it's 15th year anniversary, the whole 58 minute album is being played on this tour and with accompanying video portraits on a huge screen at the back of the stage, it all worked rather well. From the metal majesty of 'Chainsaw Charlie' to the heartbreak of 'Hold on to My Heart' – this was a rock opera of the very highest standard. For fans of the album, this will certainly be an experience they won't be forgetting in a hurry.
